Portuguese Boats at Sea was one of the first oil paintings I created after arriving in Portugal. It marked the beginning of a new chapter, both in life and in my creative journey. Painted using an oil pour method, it was an experiment in letting go, allowing the paint to move freely, swirling across the canvas in fluid tones of blue and white. The result was something deeply expressive, alive with movement and emotion.
As I watched the pour take shape, I saw a storm unfold, waves crashing, energy rising. And then came the story: two small boats, lost in the chaos, drifting together through the turmoil. I painted them in afterward, not just as figures in the sea, but as symbols of love, of staying close when everything around you is wild and uncertain.
The blues and creams crash and swirl like a storm at sea, yet within the drama, there’s a quiet calm. A coolness. A rhythm. It reminds me of the feeling of riding a wave, trusting the motion without being consumed by it.
As an Algarve artist, this piece was a deeply personal expression of transition, uncertainty, and connection. Now offered as a fine art print, this Algarve original art continues to share that energy.
As an artist painting Algarve I’m honoured that the original now lives with a collector who felt its story. This print carries that same spirit of love, surrender, and the beauty of navigating the storm.
